Dear President-elect Obama,
Once again congratulations on your historic achievement. I was so proud to be a part this, and hope you will pause to consider the concerns of progressives who worked hard for our collective victory.
I supported Dennis Kucinich in the primaries and voted for him in Vermont even though he'd bowed out by then (we had just gotten him on the ballot). One major reason was his proposal for a Department of Peace to explore alternatives to violence as the way to solve society's problems at home and abroad.
Given US intelligence now anticipates a world rife with war and estimates use of nuclear weapons by 2025, it seems clear that your administration must address the following:
* Establish a US Department of Peace and Nonviolence
* Make violence reduction and prevention a top priority in your first term
* Invest in proven violence prevention efforts for our schools, homes, and communities
* Strengthen peacebuilding internationally through foreign assistance and diplomacyI would suggest Congressman Kucinich as the first Secretary of Peace. That's change we can believe in.
Peace,
